some interesting things:

ceramics as art. "Azulejos", the painted, tin-glazed ceramic tilework found mainly in portugal/spain. i was intrigued by them in the same way tt i was intrigued by the monomers of venetian glass. read abt it here. it just felt like they took great pride in their ceramic tiles.

initially mostly muslim - geometrical patterns

later with more colours, and more pictures

alternatively, blue-and-white, apparently influenced by the chinese.
